Assyria was one of the most influential civilizations of the ancient Near East. Its history spans more than 2,000 years, divided into three main periods:
1) Old Assyrian Period, 2) Middle Assyrian Period, and 3) Neo-Assyrian Empire.

Old Assyrian Period

Began around the city of Aššur, located on the Tigris River.

Middle Assyrian Period

This era marked Assyria’s rise to regional power and the establishment of its first real empire.

Neo-Assyrian Empire

This is the golden age of Assyria—its largest, most powerful period.
Assyria became the first true world empire in history.
